Veiled Echoes: A Transient Narrative Into Surveillance (March 2024) was developed in response to themes of surveillance, anonymity, and digital control within urban space. Set in Edinburgh’s Cowgate, the work examined moments of movement within a heavily monitored public environment.
The project consisted of four portrait format photographic prints, each captured from the same fixed viewpoint. Passers by were photographed based on their movement through the frame, then digitally removed and replaced with AI style tracking boxes. This intervention shifted focus from the individual to the systems observing them, questioning the authority of the surveillant gaze.
The mobile phone style aspect ratio reflected how surveillance is now most often encountered at street level and through handheld devices. Looking back, the work marked a shift in my practice towards using digital manipulation as a critical tool to interrogate visibility and control rather than simply document public space.
