Vailed Echoes: A Transient Narrative Into Surveillance.
Veiled Echoes explores themes of surveillance, anonymity, and digital control within urban environments. Set against the charged backdrop of Edinburgh’s Cowgate, the work captures fleeting moments of passers-by before digitally removing them—subverting the gaze and challenging the authority of the surveillant lens.
The final piece is composed of four portrait-format photographic prints, each captured from the same static viewpoint using a tripod and fixed frame. Subjects were intentionally selected based on their movement through the scene, before being erased and replaced with AI tracking boxes to highlight the growing presence of dataveillance. The choice of a mobile-phone-style aspect ratio offers a ground-level, familiar perspective, mirroring the way we now often experience surveillance—through handheld devices and street-level scrutiny. This project continues my critical inquiry into society's shifting relationship with surveillance and public visibility.
