Worn Foundations (2024) responded to Newcastle’s post industrial landscape, exploring ideas of decline, resilience, and endurance. The work consisted of four concrete slabs imprinted with abstracted industrial imagery, referencing surfaces shaped by labour and repeated use.
Visitors were invited to walk across the slabs, allowing the work to change over time as the surface cracked and wore underfoot. Rather than presenting industry as something lost or erased, the piece treated wear as evidence of continuity, tracing how histories of labour remain embedded within place.
Central to the project was the development of my own concrete image transfer process, which allowed photographic imagery to be absorbed into the material itself rather than applied as a surface layer. This method became an important turning point in my practice and was later expanded and refined for use within my degree show, shaping how I continue to work with photography, material, and participation.
