In the Works (June 2025) was a degree show installation exploring post industrial legacy through material, movement, and spatial restriction. Developed in response to Newcastle’s industrial history, the work brought together concrete, steel, and photographic process to create an environment shaped by pressure, wear, and instability.

Visitors were invited to walk across image transferred concrete slabs designed to crack underfoot, becoming both pathway and obstacle. At the centre of the installation stood a welded steel structure, surrounded by crushed remnants of earlier works and enclosed by construction safety netting. These materials referenced sites under repair, containment, or abandonment, drawing attention to how industrial spaces are preserved, fenced off, or repurposed over time.

Photographic imagery sourced from industrial sites was embedded directly into the concrete using a transfer process developed throughout my practice. As the slabs fractured, the images degraded with them, allowing erosion and use to become part of the work itself.

Looking back, In the Works brought together research, process, and spatial thinking developed across my degree. It marked a point where photography, sculpture, and installation fully converged, establishing an approach that treats the image as something physical, vulnerable, and shaped by interaction rather than fixed or complete.
