The Paolozzi Travel Scholarship

Project type

Travel Photography

Date

May, 2023

Location

Berlin, Germany

The Paolozzi Travel Scholarship 2023 supported a period of independent study in Berlin, bringing together research, photography and travel. Using the city as a site, I explored Brutalist and post-war architecture through direct observation and image-making.

Developed alongside my undergraduate dissertation, the work examined the tension between Brutalism’s utopian ideals and its social and political realities. I focused on material, repetition and scale, alongside the traces left by use, neglect and adaptation.

These observations fed into my studio practice, influencing both my writing and how I began to work with architecture physically. The images later informed my degree show, shaping my use of concrete, image transfer and abstraction.

The scholarship marked a point where research and making became closely connected, helping define the direction of my practice.
