The Paolozzi Travel Scholarship
Project type
Travel Photography
Date
May 2023
Location
Berlin, Germany
Paolozzi Travel Scholarship (2023–2024) brought together research, photography, and travel as part of a funded period of independent study. The scholarship allowed me to spend time in Berlin, using the city as a site to explore Brutalist and post war architecture through direct observation and image making.
The work developed alongside my undergraduate dissertation, which examined the tension between Brutalism’s utopian ideals and its social and political realities. Moving through the city, I photographed buildings, interiors, and transitional spaces, focusing on material surfaces, repetition, and scale, as well as the traces left by use, neglect, and adaptation over time.
These observations fed directly into my studio practice, shaping both the way I wrote about architecture and how I began to work with it physically. The images made during the scholarship later informed my degree show, influencing my use of concrete, image transfer, and architectural abstraction.
Looking back, the Paolozzi Travel Scholarship marked a point where research and making became closely connected, helping to clarify the direction of my practice and the questions that continue to drive it.
